“For that last two and a half years, I have had ankle issues which stem from wear-and-tear, plus, a couple of bad injuries from all the sports I’ve participated in over the years. I have been to several doctors to figure out what was wrong and decided to undergo ankle surgery. The post-op was a long and painful road and the surgery was not a success, as I still experienced pain and swelling of the ankle. I decided to look into stem cells, which, had I known, should have been the first thing I did.
I had my consultation and after that I was convinced this was the thing to do. The whole procedure from check in, preparations for treatment, the [bone marrow] aspiration, the injections themselves, and the check-out was top notch. The staff were fantastic and made you feel safe and confident that you were in good hands. I experienced 2 days of discomfort which can be medicated for, the third day started walking on the foot, and on day four [I was] fully walking on foot for the first time in two and a half years pain-free!!! I was amazed and would recommend this to anyone to be your first choice of action.”
Regenexx maintains an active registry that tracks the post-procedure outcomes of patients. Here are some of the major findings from this outcome data for ankle and foot patients:
2 years post-treatment, patients reported a functional level of 70%.
1 year post-treatment, patients reported that their pain levels decreased to an average of 1.4 out of 10.
2 years post-treatment, patients reported an overall improvement of 73%.
This depends on numerous factors, including the condition of the area treated, a patient’s general health, etc. There is usually some early pain relief from our treatments, but healing and regeneration of tissues takes time, and it may take up to a year to achieve maximum results. Most patients notice a continuing decrease in pain and increase in function over many months post-procedure.
While pain relief is variable, patients typically see results 6-12 weeks after PRP treatment and 3-6 months after stem cell treatment.
Our Regenexx-C (cultured stem cell procedure) outcome data demonstrates that results peak around 1-2 years post-procedure.
Some patients find that one treatment produces the results they were looking for; others may see some improvement, but want additional treatments to further improve their outcome.

This depends on your specific treatment and the severity of your condition, but you will be given post-procedure instructions to follow. Most patients begin to test and expand their range-of-motion within a couple of days post-procedure and start non-weight bearing resistance training and pool therapy by week two. During weeks 3-5, we recommend that patients avoid high impact activity, but may start to walk longer distances and progress with moderate weight-bearing and resistance training. Patients can typically start to return to sport and full functional activity sometime between 7-13 weeks post-procedure. Patients also report a continued improvement in function and decrease in pain many months after their procedure. A brace, support shoe, or crutches may be required for a portion of your recovery.
Regenexx is the trusted alternative to orthopedic surgery, so whether you’ve been recommended for an ankle replacement, plantar fasciectomy, Achilles tendon surgery, or another foot or ankle surgical procedure, it’s worth exploring all your options. The first step is to have a consultation or phone review to determine if you are a candidate for Regenexx treatment. Not everyone is a candidate, and our physicians will let you know if surgery is your better option. During your Regenexx Cayman phone review or initial consultation, you will receive a candidacy rating of good, fair, or poor, so you can make a well-informed decision before committing to treatment. It’s our goal to reduce your pain and improve function, helping you to avoid, or delay, surgery for as long as possible.
Regenexx Cayman platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell treatments can help with a range of ankle and foot issues. To find out if our treatments can help your ankle or foot, the first step is to have a phone review. During your phone review, the physician will conduct a thorough review of your imaging, medical history, and treatment goals. You will then receive a candidacy rating of good, fair, or poor, so you have a clear understanding of your expected outcome from treatment.
Yes, we typically recommend physical therapy after treatment. You will receive specific post-procedure instructions and rehab protocols, including restricted and permitted activities, therapeutic exercises, rehab progression, and physical therapy recommendations.
We can provide joint-specific outcome data (i.e. all foot and ankle patients), but not condition-specific data. Regenexx maintains an active patient registry of all patients and publicly publishes patient outcomes. Please contact us if you would like to know more.
During your initial consultation, the physician will determine whether you will need crutches or a wheelchair. If required, Regenexx Cayman will provide you with crutches (to take home) or a wheelchair (for use on island).
