To find out if you’re a candidate for Regenexx-C stem cell therapy, simply schedule a phone review with a Regenexx Cayman physician. During your phone review, the physician will thoroughly review your medical history, imaging, and treatment goals. You will also receive a candidacy rating of good, fair, or poor, so you have a clear understanding of your expected Regenexx-C outcome.
Did you know? Patients who are poor candidates for our same day stem cell treatment (Regenexx-SD) can sometimes be fair or good candidates for our cultured stem cell treatment (Regenexx-C)?
Please contact our patient care team if you are interested in booking a phone review.
Regenexx-C treatment requires two separate trips to the Cayman Islands. For Part 1, we recommend that you stay on island for at least 2 - 3 days. For Part 2, you will typically be required to stay on island for 7-9 days.
Yes. Treating multiple joints at the same time is one of the great benefits of Regenexx-C treatment. We grow your stem cells, so you have up to 100-1,000 times more cells available for treatment. The increased cell count from the culturing process makes it more likely that you can have multiple treatments.
No, Regenexx treatments are autologous, which means we use your own stem cells. Similarly, your stem cells cannot be used to treat other patients.
You can safely store your cells indefinitely, and they will be available for treatment at any time. Please note, we culture-expand your stem cells; however, you will have a finite number of stem cells available. Once all your stem cells have been used for treatment, you will require another bone marrow aspiration (if you want to continue to store your cells or have Regenexx-C treatment).
Prior to your bone marrow aspiration (BMA), we thoroughly numb the area. Approximately 80% of patients report the BMA as “comfortable with no major soreness after the procedure.” There is some discomfort during the procedure, but it is not typically painful – many patients describe it as a deep pressure.
Patients sometimes confuse a bone marrow aspiration with a bone marrow biopsy, which is a much more invasive and painful procedure. If you are feeling anxious, we can provide oral medication to help you relax, or we can arrange conscious sedation (a type of anesthesia).
Conscious sedation is a form of anesthesia; whereby, you remain conscious and you continue to breathe without assistance. Note: this is NOT full anesthesia.
Conscious sedation is not required; however, the physician might recommend it if you are having a bone augmentation or a Regenexx-C intradiscal treatment. It might also be recommended for other procedures – especially if you are feeling particularly nervous.
You can expect to feel some level of discomfort, aching, or pain after your treatment. Patients typically experience moderate discomfort 12-48 hours after a re-injection, which gradually dissipates after a few days.
It is common to experience mild to moderate swelling – inflammation is a positive response that means your body is trying to heal itself. Swelling usually begins 1 – 2 days after the re-injection and lasts 3 – 4 days. Patients may take Tylenol but are asked to avoid NSAIDs.
Your physician will provide you with specific post-procedure instructions and rehab protocols. Generally speaking, you should take it easy for the first 12-24 hours after your procedure. If you are pain-free and symptom-free, you can slowly test the area with “activity-as-tolerated.”
Many of our patients go back to doing light activities within a week of their treatment. Patients can usually partake in more dynamic exercise 6 to 8 weeks after Regenexx-C. Active patients report being able to push themselves back to their higher levels of activity between weeks 8 to 12.
Most patients report a modest improvement in the first month, and patients usually notice continuous improvement many months post-procedure. Our outcome data suggests peak functionality at 1-2 years after treatment.
Like all medical procedures, Regenexx procedures have a success and failure rate, and not everyone will experience the same results. Results may vary based on an individual’s overall condition, health, the number and frequency of stem cell therapies, and recovery response time. Depending on the underlying condition, some patients see significant improvement after one treatment, while others elect to have “top-up" treatment in the future
Regenexx-C treatment can be used on most joint structures. It is frequently used to treat severe orthopedic issues, and it is a trusted alternative to orthopedic surgery. Regenexx-C is used to treat a number of orthopedic issues and conditions, including arthritis, non-union or non-healing fractures, avascular necrosis, degenerative disc disease, herniated or bulging discs, or spondylosis. To find out if Regenexx-C can treat your orthopedic condition, please contact our patient care team.
Prior to your treatment, we use local anesthetic to numb your skin. Everyone perceives pain differently, but most patients report the re-injection as mildly to moderately uncomfortable. It also depends on your pain tolerance, type of treatment, injection site, and the number of joints being treated. If you are worried about treatment, oral medication can be given to help you relax, or conscious sedation can be coordinated.
Regenexx-C treatment starts at US$19,500. The total cost depends on the number of re-injection sites and your individual treatment plan.
Regenexx-C is not covered by insurance; however, some health insurance providers cover the cost of the initial consultation. Coverage varies depending on the provider and plan, so we encourage patients to contact their health insurance company directly.
Your safety is our priority. At Regenexx Cayman, our quality assurance protocols are designed to ensure your stem cells are safe and healthy for re-injection. Over the years, Regenexx physicians have performed many studies assessing both the safety and complications of using culture-expanded stem cells for orthopedic use, and have found there to be no neoplastic complications detected at any stem cell re-implantation site.
After your stem cells are cryopreserved, a sample is tested for sterility at a third-party laboratory. A stem cell sample is also sent for karyotype analysis at an independent cytogenetics laboratory at the University of Colorado. This analysis examines whole chromosome structure and number, which is indicative of cell stability and health. As an additional safeguard, a sample is tested immediately before re-injection to ensure your stem cells are free of endotoxins.
All sample processing takes place in a highly controlled laboratory, which meets ISO Class 7 criteria and is certified by the International Cellular Medicine Society (ICMS). Our laboratory air is HEPA-filtered, and we maintain stringent standards of sterility for clinical products, use aseptic technique, and adhere to strict protective gowning protocols. All lab equipment and surfaces are frequently and thoroughly disinfected.
