Dr. Leiber: Florida, Grand Cayman, and the White House
With Florida being just a quick, direct flight away, Dr. James Leiber is one of Regenexx Cayman’s most frequent visiting physicians. Dr. Leiber travels to Cayman monthly to provide treatment for international patients over the weekend.
“It’s all about helping people get back to the activities they love to do. I couldn’t do it otherwise…. It’s tough sometimes to be a full-time doctor but also a clinical director, but it’s worth it because I can craft my vision for how healthcare should be delivered.”
Dr. Leiber’s vision for how healthcare should be delivered is reflected in his outstanding patient care and in-depth approach:
“We pride ourselves on the exceptional care that our patients receive. A thorough history and examination is crucial. How can you really understand what someone is going through, dig deep into their issues, educate, and create a plan of care together, when you have only 10 minutes with someone? What we do takes time.”
Dr. Leiber’s diligence and methodical approach can be attributed in part to his military background; he previously served in the U.S. Air Force as an officer and educator. He was also personal physician to the Vice President, and even provided medical council for the President. Out of curiosity we asked Dr. Leiber to recount his first visit to the White House.
“I went to the hospital one morning thinking it was a regular day, but I got a call from my Chief of Staff who told me that he recommended me to see the President of the United States for a medical issue. He said that a black sedan was scheduled to pick me up later that day and that I should make myself available. I was taken to the back of the White House, through security and into the Medical Unit. Hours went by waiting to be called to see the President. Eventually, secret service took me up to the West Wing in an elevator. When I got out, I was in a large gym and to the left was a room where I saw the President sitting on a cheap massage table. I kept my composure and greeted him and then asked him to come down from off the table so that I could adjust the table legs. As I adjusted one side of the table, he got on the floor and adjusted the other side…wearing only his underwear! The whole thing was rather surreal. I ended up finishing that appointment thinking that it was a one-time thing. But received a call from the Vice President’s primary doctor shortly thereafter. I met the Vice President in his office at the Old Executive Building and subsequently saw him regularly for about two years. I’m grateful having had the opportunity to do my small part in taking care of our nation’s leaders.”
